Washington State University’s Board of Regents has approved a policy shift that will once again permit police officers, firefighters, and other emergency personnel to enter dormitories without restrictions. The measure, which is only temporary, is a response to a state judge’s ruling last spring that it was a violation of students’ privacy rights for the police to walk around dormitories looking for violations of the law (The Chronicle, May 15). The regents plan to vote on a permanent solution to the issue at their next meeting, in November, according to a university news release.
