The police department in Greensboro, N.C., said this afternoon that it had ceased investigating a fight this month on the Guilford College campus that left three Palestinian students seriously injured and six football players under arrest. According to the News & Record, a local newspaper, the police issued a statement today saying that, “after careful review of this case and consultation with the Guilford County district attorney’s office, no evidence was found at this time that would allow the Greensboro police department to proceed any further in this investigation.”
The football players were arrested and charged as a result of complaints sworn out by the Palestinian students and issued by a local judge. The district attorney’s office said it would decide how to proceed after the college had completed its own judicial proceedings. The police department’s announcement followed its interviews with the Palestinian students this week.
The Palestinians have said they were attacked by the football players on January 20 and taunted with racial epithets. The FBI is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime. A parent of one of the accused has said the Palestinian students started the fight. Three football players were arrested initially, two more were detained last week, and a sixth was charged on Monday.
