Plan to Fold NSF's Astronomy Program Into NASA Draws Mixed Reviews
Six years ago, Andrea Ghez suspected that there was a massive black hole at the center of our galaxy. To prove its existence, she needed money, but she didn't turn to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the first choice for most astronomers.
Instead, Ms. Ghez, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California at Los Angeles, applied for a grant from the National Science Foundation.
