Pizza, Kit Kats, and the Soft Sell
On a recent Sunday evening here at Mary Washington College, a freshman, Jonathon May, polishes off a few slices of pizza, takes a sip of orange soda, then lifts the handset off its cradle and punches the number of another alumnus into the phone before him. At his elbow is a thick stack of pledge sheets that he hopes to get through before the end of the night.
When Mr. May announces where he is calling from, the person on the other end hangs up.
