The University of California at Berkeley’s commencement convocation was abruptly shortened on Wednesday, when the invited speaker refused to cross a picket line and, as a result, skipped the event, according to an article in The Oakland Tribune. The guest was Fabian Núñez, a Democrat who is speaker of the California Assembly. The picket line was not thrown up by strikers, but by workers seeking higher pay. The ceremony went ahead, albeit more briefly than planned.
