Physicists Gamble on Extra Time in Search for Weighty Particle
Just short of its scheduled demise, Europe's premier particle collider gained an additional month of life when the director of the facility decided on September 14 to continue chasing one of physics' most highly sought prizes: the hypothethetical particle called the Higgs boson. The move temporarily stalled the construction of an even more powerful collider at the Swiss complex, known as CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
