In early October a rumor circulated that New York University was trying to lure Kwame Anthony Appiah, one of the nation's best-known philosophers and a leading thinker on race and society, away from Princeton University, where he has taught for 11 years.

Asked about it at the time, Mr. Appiah told The Chronicle in an email, "That could happen in the future, but I don't have an offer from NYU."
