President & Editor in Chief
Philip W. Semas has been editor in chief of The Chronicle of Higher Education Inc. since 2002 and was named president in 2009. He oversees all editorial and business operations of the company, including The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, their Web sites, and the Web site Arts & Letters Daily.
Previously, Semas served for seven years as editor of new media. He is the founding editor of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, which began publication in 1988, and he edited that newspaper, the leading source of news and information about the nonprofit world, for its first seven years. He began his career at The Chronicle of Higher Education as a reporter in 1969 and served as managing editor from 1978 to 1988.
He received his higher education at the University of Oregon.
