Reports that the football coach at Iowa State University intends to hire a chaplain to minister to his players have prompted four professors to start a petition drive to oppose the idea, according to the Iowa State Daily. The petition, which so far has more than 100 signatures, contends that hiring such a chaplain at the public university, even if financed with private money, would represent a violation of the U.S. Constitution’s ban on state establishments of religion. —Andrew Mytelka
