Peru's Troubled Universities
The institutions, once infested with guerrillas, now find poverty their greatest enemyHidden behind a sprawling concrete wall in the heart of this dusty city, Peru's oldest and most prestigious public university looks defeated. Laboratories in the department of chemistry, once envied by universities throughout South America, are now useless. Elsewhere, cracked pipes and twisted wires sprout from water-stained ceilings. Bathrooms are too hideous to enter.
