New Pentagon-NSF Grants Draw Criticism From Social Scientists
In a speech last year, U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates laid out a vision: a consortium of "universities that will promote research in specific areas," including studies of the Chinese military and radical Islamic movements. This month the vision—broadly known as the Minerva Initiative—came a step closer to reality with the announcement of 17 national-security-related social-science projects at North American universities, paid for by the Pentagon.
