Pentagon Backs Away From Strict Controls on Basic Research
After sharp criticism from researchers, the Department of Defense is revising proposed rules that would have required academic scientists doing military research to obtain approval before publishing or discussing their work at scientific conferences. University lobbyists say they are relieved that the Pentagon is reconsidering its policy, which they had feared would have caused many institutions to stop working with the military.
