The University of Pennsylvania has joined several other top colleges and universities in deciding to refrain from investing its endowment holdings in companies that do business with Sudan. According to a statement released today by the university, its president, Amy Gutmann, said “the genocide occurring in Darfur with the support of the Sudanese government represents a moral evil that we cannot ignore.” Ms. Gutmann said Penn does not have investments in any of the companies right now but would bar such investments in the future. Other colleges that have recently taken the same step include Princeton University and Williams College.
