Payroll Snafus Continue to Bedevil Florida A&M U.

Florida A&M University is certainly providing James H. Ammons with an eventful welcome as its new president. Mr. Ammons was ushered into office this month on the heels of word that A&M had been put on probation by its regional accreditor. That calamity followed a critical state audit of A&M’s finances that led some state lawmakers to call for a criminal investigation.

Now Mr. Ammons faces a renewed problem of making the university’s payroll. According to The Tallahassee Democrat, 242 professors and other employees did not get paid last week. That recalled an episode in February in which about 600 adjunct professors and graduate teaching assistants said they had yet to receive a paycheck in 2007.

“We are going to investigate,” Mr. Ammons told the Democrat, “and those persons who are responsible for the delays are going to be held accountable.” —Andrew Mytelka
