Paying Attention to Books

To the Editor:

Although Lennard J. Davis rightly claims that all students do not read everything their teachers assign them, his treatment of reading is very superficial ("Huckleberry Who?," The Chronicle Review, March 23).

Good reading is not merely going through the whole book one page at a time. When one gives a book one's full attention and becomes totally engrossed in it, one does not notice the print or the pages, for one's focus is upon the referential world depicted by
