Pay and Benefits: About These Data

These tables shows the pay and benefits received by the chief executive and the five most highly paid employees (other than the top officer) at each of 479 private colleges. Figures on pay are given for the two most recent available fiscal years, which are 1997-98 and 1998-99. The information about benefits covers only the latter fiscal year.

The Chronicle compiled the information from the Form 990 each institution filed with the Internal Revenue Service for the past two years. Form
