Patient Dies in Gene-Therapy Trial at University of Pennsylvania Medical Center
An 18-year-old patient died late last month at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, shortly after receiving an infusion of genetically altered viruses in a gene-therapy experiment. The event has halted that study and caused federal officials to ask all researchers using similar viruses to scrutinize their records for evidence of any side effects.
