Patent Verdict Favors Harvard and MIT
A federal jury in Boston this month found Eli Lilly and Company liable for infringing a patent that was granted in June 2002 to Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, and was licensed to a company called Ariad Pharmaceuticals. The verdict could lead to a multimillion-dollar payout to the academic institutions from Lilly and, eventually, additional millions from other companies, too.
