Outgoing Administration Seeks Dismissal of Lenders' Suit Against Education Dept.
In one of its final acts, the Clinton administration asked a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit in which student-loan-industry officials accused the Education Department of acting illegally when it provided special benefits to participants in the direct-loan program.
In separate actions over the past two years, the department reduced fees paid by borrowers in the program, and lowered the interest rate for those who pay their loans on time. In their lawsuit, filed in November in U.S.
