Outcasts in Academe

To the Editor:

Alison Schneider's characterization of Tony Martin, an Africana-studies professor at Wellesley College, as someone who is "on the left" is a mistake typical of much contemporary journalism ("The Academic Path to Pariah Status," July 2). Martin's views are well known. He is an anti-Semite and a racist -- the very opposite of the leftist tradition of universalism and tolerance.
