Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Shelving by Height at the Library of Congress

A few years ago, a rumor was going around that the Library of Congress wanted to save space by shelving books by height. "Height? Why not color?" I asked my friends, hoping to impress upon them the senselessness of the plan. As any experienced researcher can attest, when books are shelved by subject group, even the most obscure, arcane, and unindexed topics can be found by flipping through pages and scanning texts
