Open ROTC to Grad Students

To the Editor:

Reading Donald A. Downs's article, "ROTC and the Future of Liberal Education" (The Chronicle Review, May 15), brings out two problems with the interaction between academe and the military. First, there is a disconnect between the image most U.S. citizens have of soldiers and the reality of soldiers. Second, academics have a problematic attitude toward the U.S. military.

I wonder if those situations could partly be reconciled by extending or modifying
