Ontario Study Finds Students Lazy and Unprepared

The Wikipedia kids are less mature and lack many of the necessary skills to thrive in higher education, according to a study released today by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations. The group’s president, Brian Brown, called the results, which were based on a survey, “troubling” but not surprising in a written statement.

Those surveyed — professors and librarians in the Canadian province — said that freshmen arrived on their campuses lacking the ability to think independently, were weak in necessary writing and mathematics skills, and depended too much on Wikipedia. And students themselves seemed to agree with that assessment, according to The Toronto Star, which quoted one first-year journalism student as saying, “I’m addicted to Wikipedia.” —Karen Birchard
