Online Education Not a Second Choice

To the Editor:

Scott Arthur Masear's cute cartoon (The Chronicle Review, December 1) showed a dog saying, "Because of the invisible fence, I had to settle for an online degree." I find it interesting that while many researchers (as well as articles in The Chronicle) highlight the fact that online learning is no longer a passing fad but instead mainstream higher education, the subtle (or not-so-subtle) message continues that online education is somehow less than on-campus
