One-Minute Lectures? What Would Socrates Say?

To the Editor:

A lecture finished in one minute! This is astounding progress ("These Lectures Are Gone in 60 Seconds," The Chronicle, March 6). Let's go further. Since research shows that the average retention rate of lecture material is roughly 5 percent, the sage had better come to the point in three seconds flat. The rest of the verbiage would not register. With this breakthrough, we could be well on our way to assigning the lecture to its rightful place in the dustbin of academic
