On Capitol Hill, Thinking of Poems
When Bernie Sanders was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, I took a leave of absence from my position as a professor of English at the University of Vermont to join his staff in Washington. Nowadays I live in a world of legislation and politics, but I realize time and again that I very much miss teaching poetry. There seems no stop to the poems that suffuse my life: They seep into my consciousness at all sorts of moments, and sometimes I have a need to tell people about them.
