Old News: the Decline of Research Universities
To the Editor:
I was pleased to read Stanley N. Katz's essay on the "fractionalized" state of contemporary research universities, and saddened to learn of his melancholy ("The Pathbreaking, Fractionalized, Uncertain World of Knowledge," The Review, September 20). But I was also surprised that Katz, an experienced scholar, would write such a piece at this point -- for at least three reasons.
