Offshore Medical Schools Operate With Minimal Oversight
W ho exactly is regulating the new, for-profit medical schools in the Caribbean? As it turns out, that depends on your definition of the word "regulate."
A national government must grant a license to a medical school if it wishes to be listed in the World Health Organization's World Directory of Medical Schools. But some governments do so without actually setting foot on the campus. Once a school is listed, its graduates are eligible for licensure in about 40 U.S. states.
