Ode to the Blackboard
I start the first class of each semester by walking into the room, picking up a piece of chalk from the tray, and writing my name, then the course name, on the blackboard. Which means that I begin each term facing the blackboard, not the class.
Which is just how I like it. I lift my right arm, as if in greeting, as if to say, Here we are again, old friend. Here’s the latest word in our long, dusty story.
