Obama's 'Competitiveness' Agenda Offers Support for Colleges

In a speech outlining his agenda to bolster the competitiveness of the U.S. economy, Sen. Barack Obama last week promised to pay for the college education of people who commit themselves to teaching, to provide a $4,000 tax credit toward college tuition in exchange for students' performing public service, to double federal funds for basic research, and to make permanent a federal tax credit for research and development.
