Mother Theodore Guerin, a 19th-century nun who founded an academy for women that became St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, was among four people who were declared saints of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Benedict XVI today. Mother Guerin, who was born in France, endured harsh conditions on the American frontier and resisted the objections of a local bishop in order to establish the college, near Terre Haute, Ind., the Associated Press reported. The institution enrolled its first student in 1841.
