Number of Students Transferring From Community Colleges to Elite Institutions Plunges

Selective four-year colleges enroll a smaller percentage of transfer students than they did 20 years ago, despite the growing number of students who start their postsecondary education at community colleges.

Fewer than 1 percent of entering students at the nation's elite private colleges in 2002, and about 8 percent of those at elite public colleges, transferred from two-year institutions, according to a report on a national study released last week by the Jack Kent Cooke
