Not a New Idea for Engineering Education

To the Editor:

I find it interesting that Purdue University should feel the need to devote a separate department to engineering education ("Battling the Image of 'a Nerd's Profession,'" The Chronicle, July 9). ... This effort seems to be a very bad case of reinventing the wheel, as such a program already exists nationwide. It is called Project Lead the Way, and its major purpose is to increase the number of high-school students who enter and succeed in engineering and
