Dumb luck and a big endowment bagged Harvard first place in a new college-ranking program unveiled this month by a geology professor at Duke University.
Harvard officials had no comment, but no matter. Three seconds later, the service's latest rankings showed that blind fortune had catapulted Caltech to the top.
Harvard, down and out at No. 4, might take solace in this thought: First place isn't what it's cracked up to be.
