Not Black Enough

Late in life, weary of practicing juvenile law, I complete a Ph.D. in English and become a visiting faculty member at Semi-Rural Midwest University — not its real name. While teaching at SRMU, I interview for a tenure-track position at a public, Midwestern research university. Let's call it the University of Generica.
