Northwestern U.'s Women's Soccer Coach Quits Over Hazing Incident

Jenny Haigh, the women’s soccer coach at Northwestern University, resigned on Tuesday, a month after her team drew harsh criticism and a university punishment for participating in a widely publicized hazing incident, the Chicago Tribune reported today.

In a brief written statement, Ms. Haigh did not mention the hazing incident, which was disclosed when a Web site, Bad Jocks, published photographs of Northwestern players dressed only in their underwear, blindfolded, and performing lap dances for men’s soccer players (The Chronicle, May 17).

The incident was one of several that spurred increased scrutiny of some college coaches (The Chronicle, June 2). After initially suspending the team, Northwestern reinstated the program this month. But several players were suspended from some games this fall, and every player must participate in community service (The Chronicle, June 11).

Ms. Haigh’s resignation leaves the program without a coach less than two months before the season starts.
