Northwestern U.'s President to Retire

Henry S. Bienen, Northwestern University’s president since 1995, will step down next year, university officials said yesterday. Among the accomplishments of Mr. Bienen’s tenure are the quadrupling of the university’s endowment (it stands at $7-billion) and the growth of outside-financed research to an annual rate of $416-million.

Mr. Bienen, 68, is a political scientist and former dean of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He announced his retirement plans in a letter to the campus, writing: “I continue to enjoy my job immensely, but I truly believe that it is important for institutions to be refreshed regularly with new leadership.” —Paul Fain
