Northern Illinois U. Gets 1-Year Probation
The National Collegiate Athletic Association has placed Northern Illinois University on probation for one year after finding that a faculty member there provided improper benefits to a women's basketball player.
The student received the extra benefits, which the university estimated to be worth $1,973, between December 2003 and June 2004. Northern Illinois reported the violations to the NCAA in July 2004. University officials considered them "secondary" because the faculty member
