Bill Goetz, chief of staff in the office of North Dakota’s governor, has been named chancellor of the North Dakota University System. The state’s Board of Higher Education today selected Mr. Goetz, 63, who will take over in June, when the interim chancellor, Eddie V. Dunn, steps down.
The chancellorship of the 11-campus system has been turbulent of late, with Mr. Dunn’s predecessor, Robert L. Potts, resigning last June after a power struggle with the president of North Dakota State University, Joseph A. Chapman. Mr. Potts publicly complained about Mr. Chapman’s alleged insubordination, saying that it had disrupted the system’s leadership structure.
Mr. Goetz knows his way around the state capital, having been chief of staff to the governor for a decade. He previously served in several administrative positions at Dickinson State University, which is part of the state system, including as chief academic officer of the business school. Mr. Goetz was also an elected member of both chambers of the state’s legislature.
