A campus police captain at North Dakota State University has begun escorting the institution’s president, Joseph A. Chapman, to athletic and other high-profile events, according to The Forum, a newspaper in Fargo.
Police officials decided to beef up security after what Mr. Chapman called several “very concerning incidents.” In one case, an agitated individual barged into the president’s residence while his family was home. In other instances, Mr. Chapman’s assistant has closed the door to his office to prevent potentially threatening situations from developing.
“Do I feel threatened every day? Of course not,” Mr. Chapman told the newspaper. “But have we had incidents where I felt there was potential for a very serious problem? Yes, I have.”
For help in developing the police strategy, the university looked to the University of Minnesota, which has in its administration building an officer assigned to executive protection. —Paul Fain
