Noose Discovered on Office Door of Black Professor at Columbia U.

A black female professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College discovered a hangman’s noose on her office door today, according to WNBC, a local television station in New York. A Teachers College official issued a statement saying the incident was being investigated by the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes unit.

The report is the latest in a string of noose incidents on campuses. In September police officers at the University of Maryland at College Park investigated reports of a noose hanging in a tree near a building that houses several black campus groups. And earlier this month the head of the U.S. Coast Guard spoke to cadets at the Coast Guard Academy about two nooses discovered there during the summer. —Scott Smallwood
