12 professors turned down for tenure at the U. of North Texas cry foul, but the university says it is striving for excellence

At the University of North Texas, chances used to be good that a professor who applied for tenure would be rewarded with the university's seal of approval.

In 2003, for example, only one of the 33 professors who went up for tenure was denied. The year before, none of the 25 professors who applied got the thumbs down.
