Faculty members at the Community College of Philadelphia voted no confidence this week in the college’s president, Stephen M. Curtis, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The vote was 206 to 33 among full-time faculty members, who issued a statement complaining that Mr. Curtis was autocratic, had cut student services, and had failed to secure money from the city.
The referendum was drafted on March 26, the day faculty members ended a two-week strike over pay and agreed to a new five-year contract. The college suspended classes for its 37,000 students during the strike.
During the labor dispute, Mr. Curtis, who has been president since 1999, said the cash-strapped college faced tough choices. “Our state and local funding sources do not consistently give us the increases we have to have in order not to put the burden on students and tuition,” he said. —Paul Fain
