New and Improved Research on Education
To the Editor:
If education were uniform in outcome, randomized trials might be more useful ("No Classroom Left Unstudied," The Chronicle, May 28).
As has been noted by many scholars, we expect our schools to accomplish many different outcomes. Although there is agreement that young people should be developing basic skills, there is also strong support for the development of more-abstract thinking skills, vocational skills and attitudes, and citizenship, as well as personal
