New York U. Medical Center Receives $100-Million Gift

New York University Medical Center will receive $100-million from the chairman of its Board of Trustees, a businessman who gave the center $100-million anonymously in 1999, The New York Times reported. Effective today, the center will be renamed the NYU Elaine A. and Kenneth G. Langone Medical Center, in honor of the chairman and his wife, the university announced. The combined amount is the largest gift the medical center has ever received, the university said.

Mr. Langone put no restrictions on the gift, meaning the center can spend the money as it sees fit. The university said the money would be used to help pay for a $1-billion hospital pavilion connecting its School of Medicine, the Tisch Hospital, the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

According to the Times, Mr. Langone made the first donation anonymously because he wanted to show a tangible commitment but “I didn’t want people to think I was just showing up and doing this.” —Hurley Goodall
