New University Seeks to Help Saudi Arabia Broaden Its Economy

Alan G. Goodridge might not seem the obvious choice to help build a university from scratch in one of the world's most conservative societies.

This month he became provost and acting president of Alfaisal University, the first private, nonprofit, coeducational university in Saudi Arabia.

But Mr. Goodridge, who until recently was provost of the far less exotic University of Toledo, says his job is to help create an American-style research university — albeit one that
