New Survey Finds Widespread Belief in God on University Faculties

Maybe professors aren’t so godless after all.

A new survey by the Institute for Jewish & Community Research has found that 65 percent of faculty members say they believe in God. In addition, it found that 46 percent say they have a “personal relationship with God.”

Also notable: 73 percent of professors want their children to have “some religious training,” while 84 percent agree that certain moral values should apply to all cultures.

The institute’s news release plays up the finding that a slight majority of nonevangelical faculty members have “cool or unfavorable views” toward evangelical Christians.

But what may be more interesting is the high percentage of the 1,300 professors surveyed who are also believers. That finding echoes a study of 1,500 professors last year by two sociologists. —Thomas Bartlett
