New Southeastern Conference Group Endorses Academic Standards for Athletes

Professors and administrators from the 12 universities of the Southeastern Conference met here this month to form the Association of SEC Faculty Leaders, which will promote faculty governance of college sports.

The SEC faculty are following peers in the Big Ten and Pacific-10 Conferences, which formed similar committees out of concern about the overcommercialization of college sports and the rapid increase of spending on big-time college sports.
