HELPING HAND: Just over a year ago, the prolific scholar Sander Gilman left the University of Chicago, where he was a professor of comparative literature, Germanic studies, and psychiatry, for the University of Illinois at Chicago, to be director of the new Humanities Laboratory. In response to what he calls a "decade-long narrowing of audiences and options for scholars in the humanities," he wanted to make research more collaborative -- along the lines of the natural sciences
