The University of Chicago’s next president seems likely to be Robert J. Zimmer, a longtime member of its mathematics department and currently the provost at Brown University. According to a news release issued by Chicago, Mr. Zimmer was recommended to the university’s Board of Trustees by a presidential-search committee. The trustees are scheduled to vote on the nomination on Friday. If approved as expected by the board, Mr. Zimmer would succeed Don M. Randel as president on July 1. Mr. Randel is leaving Chicago to become president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (The Chronicle, July 27, 2005).
